Dear Jan,

Now I'm able to provide you with information that connects me with Simon H. Whitmore's branch of the family tree.

Starting with his grandfather who served in the Revolutionary War and was stationed at Fort Ticondoroga, on the Canadian Border in New York State. At present I have no date of birth for Grandpa William nor to whom he was married.

I have data on only one son, Benjamin Whitmore; Simon's father who was born in Standish, Maine on 19 July 1793. On 16 September 1816 he married Sarah Crisey of Gorham, Maine. (Family legend indicates her name might have been Cressey) She was born in Gorham, Maine 10 Janurary 1798. Benjamin died 28 July 1870 and Sarah passed away on 30 September 1873.

Their children were as follows:

I. William Charles, born 19 March 1817. (According to information given to my Aunt Evangeline who was known in the family as Eva, William was named for his Grandfather)

ii. Elizabeth J., born 5 February 1819 and died 15 February 1901

iii, Mary, born 14 April 1821.

Iv. Charles, born 11 July 1823.

v. Simon H. born 28 October 1825; died 1906.[The Whitmore of Whitmore, California]

vi. Uriah, born 20 October 1828, died 27 October 1830

vii. Benjamin F. born 1 October 1831, died 29 November 1837

viii. * * Eunice Ann, born 16 July 1833. Died 4 August 1893, in Portland .Maine (* * My grandmother) On 7 November 1853 she married Cyrus L. Small of Raymond Maine.

ix. Enoch, born 10 May 1835. For 20 years he was a well known business man in Lewiston, Maine and married a local girl. In his late middle age he migrated to San Diego, CA

x. Sarah, born 1 August 1837

xi. Wesley, born 11 May 1840, died 1 January 1842.

Simon's sister, Eunice Ann married Cyrus L. Small in Casco, Maine 7 November 1853. Cyrus L. died in Greenwood, Maine 14 September 1883. Their children were as follows:

i. Evangeline (Eva) born in Casco, Maine, 26 November 1854, and died in Portland, Maine 9 July 1909. (Eva never married..)

ii. John born in Lovell, Maine 13 October 1855. Died in Chesterville, Maine 28 September 1938. He married Fannie Auger in Portland, Maine 3 October l879.

iii. Cyrus Frank, born in Greenwood, Maine 5 May 1857, died in Minneapolis, MN 1937

iv. Charlotte, (Lottie) born Greenwood, Maine 18 August 1864, died in Farmington, Maine 1934.

v. Charles Whitmore, born in Greenwood, Maine 10 October 1872. Died in Chesterville, Main 13 August 1951. ( My father.)

Charles Whitmore Small Married Mary French Pinkham of Chesterville, Maine 1 May 1899. Their children were as follows:

i. Charles Pinkham, born in Chesterville, Maine 25 February 1903, died in Hackensack, NJ 3 Ma 1989.

ii. Eunice Emily, born in Chesterville, Maine 3 August 1911, died in Boston, MA. 17 December 19 (She was named for her grandmother Eunice Ann Whitmore.)

iii. (*) Dwight Franklin, born in Chesterville , Maine, 6 December 1919.[The writer of this letter.]

It is interesting to note that each of Charles Whitmore Small's children grew up in a different generation period.

I realize that this is, probably more information than you need but it does establish my relationship Simon H. Whitmore

I knew about Whitmore Hall in England that was built in 1100 AD. Information stored in the archives of the New England Historical Genealogical Society (NEHGS), of which I am a member, indicates that that the Whitmore's could be related to the Whitemore Clan that predates the Whitmore Hall.

It appears that the first Whitmore's arrived in New England from London during the period from the 1630's through the 1650's, when ships from England were arriving in the "New World," more frequently.

Following is a list of Whitmore names that could be related to Simon's family for which I have no proven links:

1. William Whitmore Esq. of Taunton, MA. Went to Harvard College and passed an oral examination by his peers and became a well known Boston Lawyer.

2. There was a William Whitmore in Portsmouth, NH whose occupation was that of" Goldsmith." He was in partnership with a Sea Captain who sold William’s creations in England for a commission.

3. Three Whitmore's were in the British Army prior to and through the Revolutionary War. Two of them were Colonels and one was a Major. Daniel was one of the Colonels. (Were they fighting brothers and cousins during the wars? Or did they desert from the British Army and settle in the Colonies as many of the British Soldiers did?)

4. In 1795 a Daniel Whitmore arrived in Gorham, Maine to establish a homestead. (What branch the family tree did he belong to?)

5. Paulina Whitmore and Samuel Nason were married 8 November 1824 in Gorham, Maine. (Was she a sister to Simon's father, Benjamin ?)

6. Sarah Whitmore married Abna Martin 15 February 1807 in Standish, Maine. ( Another sister Simon's father?)

7. Ruhanna Whitmore married Joseph Nebigan, 20 March 1809. ( Related to Sarah and Benjamin ?)

8. Joseph Whitmore married Elizabeth Martin in Gorham, Maine 7 May 1809. (Were they brother and sister to Sarah and Abna ?)

9. Hannah Whitmore married Samuel Hamlin, of Brunswick, Maine 27 November 1806. (Is she related to Simon's father ?)

10. William Whitmore married Mary Crockford 3 April 1752 in Portsmouth, NH. (Was this the Goldsmith?)

11. William Whitmore, the son of Jeremiah Whitmore was baptized in Taunton, MA. 3 Apr 1750. (Simon's grandfather?)

12. Finally, there was a Mary Whitmore who lived in Paris, Maine, around the 1775-1777 time period. She married a John Beane became a widow then married a Colonel in the Colonial Army and became a widow again and drew a small pension from the United States Colonial Government.

I hope that this information can be of some help to your Whitmore History. Feel free to contact me by e-mail Dddsmall2024@aol.com. I am enjoying the copy of the Whitmore History that you sent me. It contains some of the missing links in my Whitmore Genealogy.

Sincerely, Dwight F. Small
